One Dead After Fiery Wreck on DKI Hwy in Hawaii Co., HI

June 4, 2026

Hawaii County, HI (June 4, 2026) – One person died in a two-vehicle collision on Daniel K. Inouye Highway near the 18-mile marker in Hawaii County on Thursday morning, June 4.

Emergency units arrived around 8:35 a.m. after reports of a serious crash involving a truck and a Kia Sedona. Both vehicles caught fire after the collision. One person was confirmed dead at the scene.

The highway was shut down in both directions while crews worked at the scene. The Hawaii Police Department continues to investigate what led to the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life.

Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim in Hawaii County, HI?

In Hawaii, a personal representative of the deceased person’s estate can file a wrongful death claim. This person acts on behalf of the surviving family members. The claim can cover funeral costs, lost income, and the emotional toll of the loss.

Once appointed, the representative may file a claim against the party whose negligence caused the death. If another driver caused the crash, that driver’s insurance may become the first source of recovery. A vehicle defect may also place responsibility on a manufacturer.

Along the Big Island, Daniel K. Inouye Highway runs through long, isolated stretches between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Route 19 along the Hamakua Coast and Route 11 near Kona also see serious crashes each year. Distance from emergency care can make these wrecks even more dangerous.

Under Hawaii law, a wrongful death claim must be filed within two years of the date of death. Missing that deadline can prevent a family from seeking recovery. Acting early gives the family more time to gather records and protect the claim.

Because these cases involve both financial and personal losses, damages may include final medical bills, burial expenses, and lost future earnings. A family may also seek compensation for loss of companionship. The value of each claim depends on the facts and available evidence.

After a fatal crash, insurance companies may push families to settle before they understand the full value of the claim. A quick offer may not account for future income loss, family support, or other long-term damages. Careful review can help prevent a family from accepting less than they may need.

Even when fault seems clear, proving negligence still requires strong records. Photos, reports, witness accounts, and crash evidence can all support the claim. Collecting these details early can make the process more organized.

If you lost a loved one in a fatal crash, a wrongful death attorney can review the facts and explain what steps may apply. A lawyer can gather records, deal with insurance companies, identify liable parties, and help protect the family’s right to pursue compensation.
