Kihei, HI – Three-Car Accident Takes One Life on S Kihei Rd
May 22, 2025
Kihei, HI (May 22, 2025) — A tragic three-vehicle crash on Tuesday evening claimed one life on North Kihei Road.
The incident took place around 7:33 p.m., roughly half a mile northwest of South Kihei Road. According to police reports, a silver 1998 Honda Civic traveling westbound crossed over the double solid yellow lines and struck the left rear quarter of a gray 2019 Nissan Frontier pickup truck heading eastbound. The Honda then continued into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a silver 2012 Toyota Camry, which was driving behind the Nissan.
The Honda driver, a 58-year-old man from Wailuku, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Both the Nissan driver, a 54-year-old Kihei resident, and the Toyota driver, a 53-year-old from Kihei, were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center with injuries.
Preliminary findings suggest that speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, while drug involvement is still under investigation.
This incident marks the 11th traffic-related fatality in Maui County for 2025, a notable increase compared to five fatalities recorded by this time last year.

Hawaii Car Accidents
Fatal car accidents in Hawaii leave a lasting impact not only on the victims but also on their families and communities. Every year, numerous lives are tragically cut short due to serious collisions on Hawaii’s roadways, many of which could have been avoided. Whether it’s the result of speeding, impaired driving, distracted behavior, or simply failing to follow traffic laws, driver negligence continues to be a leading cause of deadly crashes across the islands.
The emotional toll following a fatal accident is immeasurable. Families are left grappling with grief while also facing sudden financial hardship. In addition to mourning the loss of a loved one, they may be burdened by unexpected costs such as funeral expenses, lost income, and other financial damages. The pain is made worse when it’s clear the accident could have been prevented.
In Hawaii, deadly collisions often involve high speeds, alcohol, or drivers crossing into oncoming lanes—devastating mistakes that leave lasting consequences. When a loved one’s life is taken due to another driver’s carelessness, surviving family members have the right to seek accountability and justice.
