Kauai, HI – Three Hospitalized in Two-Car Accident on Kuhio Hwy at Hookui Rd

July 22, 2025

Kauai, HI (July 22, 2025) – Speeding is suspected to be one of the causes of a two-vehicle collision on Kauai on Sunday morning, July 20, that sent two to the hospital.

Kauai police said the collision happened at about 7:45 a.m. on Sunday on Kuhio Highway near Hookui Road in Kilauea.

A 64-year-old man was driving a 2022 Honda north on the highway when he crossed the center line and struck a Mazda going the other direction, according to a preliminary investigation. The Mazda was carrying three occupants visiting from Washington state.

Police said the man was taken to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition. A 69-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Mazda was medevaced to the Straub Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment. The Mazda’s driver, a 72-year-old man, and a second passenger, another 69-year-old woman, were treated at Wilcox.

Police said speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, but that toxicology results are still pending. The investigation remains ongoing. In the interim, officers have encouraged any witnesses to come forward.

We extend our thoughts and best wishes for a complete recovery to the injured victims and their family members at this time.
