Honolulu, HI – Man Hospitalized After Hit-and-Run at Hakimo & Paakea Rds

August 1, 2025

Honolulu, HI (August 1, 2025) – The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) is investigating a serious hit-and-run that occurred in Waianae on Thursday morning, July 31.

The incident happened at 11:50 a.m. According to police, a 91-year-old man was traveling northbound on Hakimo Road when he made a left turn onto Paakea Road. Upon making the left turn, the 91-year-old driver was broadsided by an unidentified driver who was traveling southbound on Hakimo Road.

Police said the unidentified driver fled the scene and did not stop to render aid. EMS transported the 91-year-old to the hospital in serious condition. Officials said he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

At this time, police aren’t sure if speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors. Officers are still investigating, however, and are asking anyone with any information regarding this incident to contact the HPD’s Traffic Division.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family members.

Hit-and-Run Collisions in Hawaii

Throughout Hawaii, hit-and-run accidents continue to cause devastating injuries and tragic loss of life. These incidents are especially traumatic because the at-fault driver flees the scene, leaving victims without immediate aid and families searching for answers. Unfortunately, many of these accidents stem from reckless and unlawful behavior, including speeding, distraction, or impaired driving.

Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in hit-and-run crashes. Without the protection of a vehicle, they often suffer catastrophic injuries—such as traumatic brain injuries, internal damage, and broken bones—that can quickly become fatal. According to recent national data, more than 7,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes last year, with a growing number involving drivers who abandoned the scene.

Hawaii is not immune to this crisis. Each year, local families are forced to confront the sudden and senseless loss of a loved one due to a driver’s decision to flee rather than take responsibility. These cases not only bring immense grief but also financial burdens such as funeral expenses, lost income, and emotional trauma.

If you or someone you love has been seriously injured or killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash, you have the right to pursue legal action.
