How Does Hawaii’s No-Fault Insurance System Work After a Car Accident in Makakilo, HI?

Under Hawaii’s no-fault system, your insurer pays your initial medical expenses after a car accident in Makakilo, regardless of who caused it. This protection comes through the Personal Injury Protection coverage in your policy.

After a serious accident, PIP provides at least $10,000 in medical coverage per person. It may cover hospital care, appointments, rehabilitation, and other necessary treatment for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Throughout the Makakilo community, Makakilo Drive, Palehua Road, Farrington Highway, and the H-1 Freeway carry steady traffic. Congestion and vehicles entering these busy routes can raise the risk of accidents.

Once PIP benefits run out, you may be able to seek additional compensation from the at-fault driver. Hawaii also permits certain claims when an injured person meets the state’s legal threshold for serious injuries.

Beyond immediate medical expenses, a fault-based claim may cover lost income, pain, and other related losses. Available compensation depends on the injuries, insurance coverage, evidence, and circumstances surrounding the wreck.

For damaged vehicles and property, PIP generally does not pay repair costs. Collision coverage or the at-fault driver’s property damage insurance may cover repairs, towing expenses, and other losses, depending on the policy. A property damage claim may also include the cost of a rental vehicle.

During the insurance process, photographs, medical records, repair estimates, and proof of missed work may support a claim. Keeping these documents organized can help establish the extent of the losses. Copies of bills and correspondence with insurers may also provide helpful support.

As insurance questions develop, a Makakilo car accident attorney can explain how PIP benefits and fault-based claims may apply. A lawyer can also determine whether the injuries meet Hawaii’s requirements for pursuing further damages.
