Princeville, HI – Two Drivers Injured After U-Turn Collision on Kuhio Hwy

November 20, 2025

Princeville, HI (November 20, 2025) – Two drivers suffered injuries in a serious two-vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon, November 18, in Princeville. The collision occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Kuhio Highway near the Kapaka Street intersection, according to the Kauai Police Department.

Investigators said a 2024 Toyota SUV headed south on Kuhio Highway when a 2014 Chevrolet SUV coming from the opposite direction attempted a U-turn at the Kapaka Street junction. The Toyota struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet, sending both vehicles spinning across the roadway. The Toyota left the southbound shoulder and came to a stop on the grassy roadside.

A 24-year-old woman from Kapaa drove the Toyota. Paramedics treated her at the scene before transporting her to Wilcox Medical Center for emergency care. Doctors treated her for moderate injuries and later released her. The 79-year-old man behind the wheel of the Chevrolet suffered serious injuries and remained at Wilcox Medical Center for observation and treatment.

Emergency crews shut down Kuhio Highway in both directions for about 45 minutes as officers cleared the wreckage and documented the scene. Authorities reviewed tire marks, collected debris, and photographed the roadway to understand how the crash unfolded. Early reports from the Kauai Police Department indicate that speed did not contribute to the crash.

Investigators are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether impairment played a role. The investigation remains ongoing.

We wish both drivers a full and steady recovery.

Heavy traffic, unpredictable weather, and steady tourist activity create conditions where serious collisions can unfold in seconds. Each year, hundreds of people across the islands suffer injuries that leave lasting physical and emotional effects.

Many Hawaii crashes occur when drivers make sudden turns or misjudge oncoming traffic at busy intersections like Kuhio Highway and Kapaka Street. Distraction, fatigue, and failing to yield also raise the risk of serious collisions. Even a moment of inattention can lead to injuries that change someone’s life.

Victims of Hawaii car crashes often suffer life-threatening injuries such as broken bones, head trauma, and spinal cord damage.
