May 31, 2026
Kailua-Kona, HI (May 31, 2026) – A person was seriously hurt on Saturday, May 30, after being struck by a vehicle near the exit of Old Kona Airport State Beach Park in Kailua-Kona.
According to a witness, a Tacoma driver was attempting to pass a line of vehicles leaving the park by driving on a gravel shoulder not intended for passing. The driver was traveling at what the witness estimated to be close to double the speed of surrounding traffic, kicking up a large amount of dust as the vehicle moved forward.
The person who was struck was pushing a cart and appeared to be standing in the gravel section waiting for vehicles to pass before crossing. Following the collision, the victim reported being unable to feel his legs and was in serious distress. Bystanders nearby provided comfort while he was loaded into a transport vehicle. He was conscious when taken to the hospital.
The investigation into the wreck remains ongoing.
We hope the hurt person receives the best possible care and makes a full recovery.
What Compensation May Be Available After a Serious Injury Crash in Kailua-Kona, HI?
Under Hawaii law, people who suffer serious injuries in a vehicle collision may be entitled to seek compensation for both the immediate and long-term effects of their injuries. Depending on the circumstances, damages may extend far beyond current medical bills and lost wages.
Serious injuries involving the spine, nerves, or other major body systems can create challenges that last for years or even a lifetime. In addition to emergency treatment and hospitalization, an injured person may require ongoing physical therapy, rehabilitation, specialized medical care, prescription medications, assistive devices, or modifications to their home and daily routine. These injuries can also affect a person’s ability to return to work or earn the same income they earned before the crash, creating significant financial strain over time.
For this reason, it is important to fully understand the extent of an injury before agreeing to any settlement. The long-term costs associated with future medical treatment, continued care, and reduced earning capacity are not always apparent in the weeks immediately following a collision. Accepting an early settlement before these issues are properly evaluated can leave an injured person without the resources needed to address future expenses.
A lawyer may be able to help identify the full scope of damages that could be included in a claim, including both current and anticipated future losses. This often involves working with medical providers, rehabilitation specialists, and other professionals to better understand the long-term effects of an injury.
By developing a comprehensive picture of a person’s needs, legal counsel can help pursue compensation that more accurately reflects the true impact of a serious accident and supports long-term recovery and financial stability.
