Pedestrian Hospitalized After Crash at S Beretania St in Honolulu, HI

August 18, 2026

Honolulu, HI (August 18, 2026) – A 57-year-old pedestrian sustained serious injuries early Tuesday morning, August 18, after being struck by a Honolulu Police Department vehicle. Emergency crews responded to the scene on South Beretania Street near Victoria Street at approximately 12:51 a.m. following reports of the accident.

Initial reports indicate that an HPD officer was traveling westbound on South Beretania Street when the 57-year-old man attempted to cross the roadway and entered the officer’s path of travel.

Paramedics transported the man via ambulance to a nearby hospital in serious condition. The police officer involved in the collision remained at the scene and was not injured.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the injured pedestrian as he recovers.

What Compensation Can Injured Pedestrians Recover in Honolulu, HI?

Under Hawaii law, injured pedestrians in Honolulu can recover both economic damages, such as medical bills, future care costs, and lost wages, and non-economic damages, including pain and suffering, emotional distress, and permanent disfigurement, once they meet the state’s statutory injury threshold.

Once an injured pedestrian meets Hawaii’s statutory tort threshold to step outside the no-fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) by incurring over $5,000 in paid medical expenses or suffering significant permanent loss of use, serious disfigurement, or permanent impairment, they have the legal right to seek comprehensive compensation from the at-fault driver’s insurance carrier.

Compensable losses are divided into two main legal categories: economic damages and non-economic damages.

Economic damages cover direct financial losses resulting from the collision, including emergency room care, hospital bills, future medical treatments, physical therapy, prescription medications, lost wages from missed work, and loss of future earning capacity if injuries prevent a return to full employment.

In addition, Hawaii law allows victims to recover non-economic damages for human and emotional impacts, including physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of companionship, and physical disfigurement or scarring.

Under Hawaii’s modified comparative negligence rule, an injured pedestrian can pursue financial recovery as long as their assigned share of fault for the crash is 50 percent or less, though their final financial award is reduced proportionally by their percentage of responsibility.

Even in complex traffic scenarios, motorists owe a heightened duty of care to remain vigilant and avoid striking pedestrians on public roadways. A Honolulu pedestrian accident lawyer can support crash victims by evaluating all available insurance policies, gathering medical records, coordinating with expert witnesses, and pursuing complete financial justice under Hawaii law.
