North Kona, HI (August 20, 2026) – One person was hurt on Thursday morning, August 20, in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 190 and Hina Lani Street in North Kona.

How Does Hawaii Handle Fault in a Two-Vehicle Accident in North Kona, HI?

Hawaii follows a modified comparative negligence rule, which means a person can recover damages as long as they are found less than 51% at fault for a collision, with their compensation reduced by their own share of responsibility.

Fault at an intersection can depend on signal timing, right-of-way, and driver statements, which insurance companies tend to review all of them before they make a determination.

People hurt in collisions commonly experience whiplash, fractures, or head injuries from the force of impact, and some symptoms don’t appear until hours or days later. Follow-up medical care is usually necessary to fully understand the extent of an injury, and delayed treatment can sometimes complicate an insurance claim.

It can be hard to determine fault at a two-vehicle crash since it can involve competing accounts of what happened, which is where a car accident lawyer can help gather witness statements, request traffic camera footage if available, and review the police report once it’s finalized.
