Multiple Injured in Crash Near Kolekole Gulch in Honomu, HI

June 26, 2026

Honomu, HI (June 26, 2026) – Several people were injured on early Wednesday morning, June 24, in a crash near Kolekole Gulch Park on Mamalahoa Highway.

The Hawaii County Police Department and emergency units responded around 2:11 a.m. to reports of multiple people on the ground and vehicles in the roadway. Crews worked to address the scene on the Honokaa side of the gulch.

It is not clear what the full extent of the injuries is. The crash remains under active investigation.

We wish for those injured to recover fully.

Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Car Accident in Honomu, HI?

Hawaii requires drivers to carry no-fault personal injury protection, or PIP, coverage of at least $10,000, which typically pays for initial medical bills after a crash regardless of who caused it.

Once PIP benefits are exhausted, which can happen quickly in cases that involve serious injuries like fractures or head trauma, a person may need to turn to their own health insurance or pursue a claim against the at-fault driver to cover remaining costs. Multi-vehicle crashes can also complicate this process if PIP limits are shared.

Hawaii follows a modified comparative negligence rule, meaning an injured person can still recover compensation from the at-fault driver as long as they’re found 50% or less at fault for the crash, which can become relevant once medical bills exceed what PIP coverage provides.

Sorting out which insurance policy applies first and how much each one covers is commonly one of the more confusing parts of the process, which is why a Honomu car accident lawyer is frequently brought in to help untangle overlapping coverage and make sure bills aren’t paid out of pocket unnecessarily.

Sorting out who covers what after a crash shouldn’t fall entirely on someone who’s still recovering. Our team at Leavitt, Yamane & Soldner can help make sense of overlapping insurance coverage and what comes next under Hawaii law.
