Honolulu, HI – Woman Injured by Moped Driver on N Hotel St

June 8, 2025

Honolulu, HI (June 8, 2025) – An elderly pedestrian was seriously hurt in a moped crash that occurred during a police pursuit in Honolulu’s Chinatown on Friday afternoon, June 6, according to authorities.

The incident unfolded around 2:20 p.m., when a Honolulu Police Department officer spotted a moped rider committing several traffic violations near the intersection of North Hotel and Maunakea streets. When the officer attempted to pull the rider over, the moped operator reportedly refused to stop and sped westbound onto North Hotel Street from Smith Street.

As the moped rider fled, they struck an 80-year-old woman who was lawfully crossing North Hotel Street in a marked crosswalk. The force of the collision sent the moped crashing into a nearby vehicle driven by a 47-year-old woman heading south on Maunakea Street.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene, providing aid to the elderly pedestrian before transporting her to a local hospital in serious condition. Fortunately, the driver of the car and her passengers were unharmed and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

The moped rider, however, fled the area and has not yet been located. Police are continuing their search for the suspect as the investigation remains ongoing.

We hope for the full recovery of the injured victim.

Pedestrian Accidents in Hawaii

Every year, far too many pedestrians in Hawaii are seriously injured or even killed in traffic accidents. Whether walking through the bustling streets of Honolulu or crossing quieter roads in residential areas, pedestrians face real dangers from inattentive drivers, speeding vehicles, and inadequate infrastructure. Even a seemingly minor accident can leave a lasting impact on someone’s life.

Some of the most tragic incidents involve vehicles striking pedestrians in marked crosswalks or at intersections—places where people should feel the most protected. Unfortunately, the lack of protection for those on foot means that even low-speed collisions can result in devastating injuries. Among the most common and serious injuries pedestrians suffer in crashes are:

  • Spinal cord injuries – These can lead to long-term or permanent paralysis, requiring extensive medical care and rehabilitation.
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) – Pedestrians often strike their heads on the pavement or vehicle, leading to anything from mild concussions to severe brain trauma.
  • Broken bones and fractures – The impact of a car can easily shatter bones, especially in the legs, hips, arms, and ribs.
  • Internal injuries – Blunt force trauma can cause damage to vital organs, often requiring emergency treatment and surgery.
