Driver Killed in Head-On Crash on Alii Dr in Kailua-Kona, HI
July 13, 2026
Kailua-Kona, HI (July 13, 2026) – A 21-year-old Hilo woman died on Sunday night, July 12, following a head-on traffic collision. Emergency units responded to the three-car accident site on Alii Drive near Kahaluu Beach Park at approximately 9:28 p.m.
Investigators determined that a northbound pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crossed into the oncoming lane to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone. The truck struck an oncoming pickup broadside, forcing it onto the shoulder, where it struck a parked van. The woman operating the speeding truck sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
A male passenger in the first truck and the driver of the oncoming pickup were both hospitalized following the crash. Law enforcement personnel later arrested the surviving driver on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence.
Local authorities are actively handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal wreck.
Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.
Does Hawaii Require Drivers to Report All Multi-Vehicle Crashes?
Hawaii state law requires motorists to immediately report any vehicle accident to local law enforcement if the collision results in physical injury, fatality, or property damage estimated at over three thousand dollars.
Drivers involved in a crash must remain at the scene to exchange license, registration, and insurance details with other motorists or property owners. Failing to report an accident or leaving the site of a crash involving injuries can result in severe criminal penalties and complicate subsequent insurance recovery processes.
A lawyer familiar with Hawaii law can provide invaluable legal guidance by navigating the specialized statutory frameworks surrounding liability when speed and intoxication are contributing factors.
An attorney can subpoena toxicological analysis documentation, download black box automotive control modules, and analyze scene reconstruction evidence to establish fault among multiple parties. Legal guidance can help clarify what specific choices are available to secure compensation for an injured passenger through available third-party liability or uninsured motorist coverage.
