Driver Hurt in Hit-and-Run on Sand Island Access Rd in Honolulu, HI

July 29, 2026

Honolulu, HI (July 29, 2026) – A 21-year-old driver suffered critical injuries in a hit-and-run crash on Sand Island Access Road on Tuesday morning, July 28. The collision occurred at about 6:50 a.m. in Honolulu’s Kalihi neighborhood.

Police said a northbound driver turned left from a driveway onto Sand Island Access Road and struck the 21-year-old’s southbound vehicle. The injured driver then lost control and crashed into a telephone pole. The northbound driver continued without stopping to help or provide identifying information.

Emergency units assisted the 21-year-old and transported him to a nearby hospital. Medical staff listed him in critical condition.

Officials have not released a description of the driver or the vehicle involved. The Honolulu Police Department continues to investigate the crash and has asked anyone with information to come forward.

We hope the injured driver receives the care and support he needs during his recovery.

Can I Recover Compensation After a Hit-and-Run Crash in Honolulu, HI?

Yes, you may recover payment through your own insurance or a claim against the other driver if the police identify them. Your available options depend on your policy, injuries, and supporting evidence.

In the days that follow, medical bills and missed work can quickly create financial pressure. Hawaii personal injury protection may cover qualifying treatment expenses, subject to the terms and limits of the policy.

Across Honolulu, drivers regularly travel along Nimitz Highway, Dillingham Boulevard, Ala Moana Boulevard, and the H-1 Freeway. Heavy traffic and frequent turns can make photographs, video footage, and witness information especially valuable after a crash.

As you gather important records, save medical notes, bills, repair estimates, photographs, and insurer messages. Write down anything you remember about the fleeing vehicle, including its color, visible damage, and direction of travel.

Even a small remembered detail may help investigators identify the driver. A partial plate number, unusual marking, damaged panel, or distinctive feature can support the search when combined with other evidence.

If the driver remains unidentified, uninsured motorist coverage may apply when the policy includes it and all claim requirements are met. Hawaii insurers must offer this coverage, although policyholders may reject it in writing.

Throughout the claim process, keep a timeline of medical visits, missed work, repair costs, and insurer communications. Organized records can clearly show how the crash affected your health, finances, and daily routine.

When an insurer delays the claim, gives unclear explanations, or repeatedly requests documents, resolving coverage can become frustrating. A Honolulu car accident lawyer can review your policy, organize records, communicate with the insurer, and help preserve available video footage.
