Dirt Bike Rider Hit by Truck Near Maku’u Intersection in Puna, HI

May 30, 2026

Puna, HI (May 30, 2026) – A dirt bike rider was reportedly struck by a brown Toyota Tundra on Friday, May 29, in Puna. The crash happened around 12:10 p.m. near the Maku’u intersection, just before the ’Āinaloa Boulevard roundabout on Highway 130.

A witness reported that one emergency unit arrived while they were leaving the area. The extent of the rider’s injuries remains unknown at this time.

The Hawaii Police Department continues to review what led to the collision.

We hope the rider is safe and receiving the care they need to recover.

Who Can Be Held Liable After a Motorcycle Crash on Hwy 130 in Puna, HI?

If another driver caused the crash, that person may be held liable for the rider’s injuries and losses. Hawaii follows a comparative negligence system, which allows fault to be shared between everyone involved. Compensation may decrease based on the rider’s percentage of responsibility.

Along Highway 130 in Puna, traffic stays heavy throughout the day near Maku’u Drive and Orchidland Drive. Drivers also move steadily through the ’Āinaloa Boulevard roundabout and nearby residential areas. Limited visibility can make two-lane sections more dangerous for riders.

When a truck strikes a dirt bike, injuries can become serious very quickly. Riders have little physical protection during an impact with a larger vehicle. Broken bones, spinal injuries, and head trauma often require long-term medical treatment.

Because Hawaii handles motorcycle claims differently, dirt bike riders do not receive standard no-fault PIP coverage like passenger vehicle occupants. In many cases, the at-fault driver’s bodily injury coverage becomes the main source of compensation. Early evidence and witness statements can strengthen a claim.

Before the filing deadline passes, injured riders usually need to understand how Hawaii’s two-year statute of limitations applies. If they wait too long can make it harder to preserve evidence or locate witnesses. Missing the deadline may prevent a claim entirely.

If the other driver lacks insurance, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may still help cover damages. Coverage depends on the rider’s own insurance policy and available limits. Reviewing all policies early helps identify possible recovery options.

While Hawaii limits some damages, exceptions can apply depending on the injuries involved. State law generally caps certain non-economic damages in personal injury claims. Understanding those limits early can affect how a case moves forward.

A Hawaii personal injury lawyer can review crash reports, insurance policies, and witness statements to identify possible sources of compensation. An attorney may also handle communication with insurance companies during the claims process. This can help you focus on your recovery.
