August 17, 2026
Ocean View, HI (August 17, 2026) – A two-vehicle traffic collision in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision claimed the life of a 45-year-old man and left a 21-year-old woman critically injured on Saturday afternoon, August 15.
The Hawaiʻi Police Department responded to the crash site near the intersection of Aloha Boulevard and Lehua Lane at approximately 1:17 p.m.
Preliminary reports indicate that a gold 2021 Kia Seltos operated by the 45-year-old Ocean View man was traveling westbound on Aloha Boulevard when it crossed the centerline. The Kia collided head-on with a silver 2000 Nissan Altima driven by the 21-year-old local woman.
The driver of the Kia sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m. Emergency medical services stabilized the driver of the Nissan before transporting her to Kona Community Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the person who died, and we hope the injured driver recovers completely.
What Legal Options Exist for Victims of Head-On Collisions in Ocean View, HI?
Victims of head-on collisions in Ocean View, HI, can pursue Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits through Hawaii’s no-fault auto insurance system for immediate medical care and file a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver for full damages, including pain and suffering, if their injuries exceed state statutory thresholds or PIP limits.
While Hawaii operates as a no-fault auto insurance state requiring injured parties to first utilize their own PIP benefits for basic medical care, severe head-on collisions quickly surpass these initial policy limits.
When an injury meets the state’s serious injury threshold, the victim gains the legal right to step outside the no-fault restrictions. This allows them to file a third-party liability claim or lawsuit against the negligent driver to recover complete financial compensation, including coverage for past and future medical bills, lost wages, diminished earning capacity, and non-economic pain and suffering.
Securing full compensation after a cross-centerline crash requires preserving vital scene evidence before conditions change. Attorneys can support victims by securing police crash investigation reports, analyzing vehicle impact patterns, gathering roadway surveillance or eyewitness statements, auditing all applicable primary and secondary insurance policies, and negotiating directly with insurers to maximize financial recovery.
