1 Dead, 5 Hurt After Pileup on Moanalua Fwy in Honolulu, HI

June 6, 2026

Honolulu, HI (June 6, 2026) – A four-car collision in the Kalihi area of Honolulu left a 24-year-old man dead and five others hospitalized on Friday afternoon, June 6. The collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Moanalua Freeway.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, a 22-year-old man was traveling eastbound with four passengers when his vehicle sideswiped a car driven by a 65-year-old man carrying a 52-year-old passenger. The driver then lost control, struck a vehicle operated by a 33-year-old man from behind, and pushed it into a fourth vehicle driven by another 65-year-old man.

The 24-year-old passenger died at the scene. Emergency units responded and used hydraulic rescue tools to free one person trapped inside the wreckage.

The 22-year-old driver was transported to The Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. A 22-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man suffered serious injuries, while a 25-year-old woman was listed in good condition.

The 33-year-old driver of the third vehicle was also hospitalized in good condition. The two 65-year-old drivers and the 52-year-old passenger in the other vehicles escaped injury.

Authorities believe speed and alcohol contributed to the collision. The Honolulu Police Department continues to investigate the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young man who lost his life.

Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim After a Fatal Crash in Honolulu, HI?

In Hawaii, the personal representative of a deceased person’s estate may file a wrongful death claim for surviving family members. A spouse, child, or parent may qualify to seek compensation. This may include funeral expenses, lost financial support, and loss of companionship.

Along Honolulu’s busiest roads, high-speed crashes can cause severe harm. Moanalua Freeway, H-1 Freeway, and Likelike Highway carry heavy traffic during the day. Chain-reaction crashes on these roads often give drivers little time to react.

After a fatal crash, the at-fault driver’s insurance may provide compensation first. Confirmed alcohol involvement may support a wrongful death claim. Families may still seek civil damages while any criminal case moves separately.

Because Hawaii generally gives families two years to file a wrongful death claim, families should act before key evidence becomes harder to collect. Crash reports, witness accounts, and other records may become harder to find over time. Early action can help protect important details.

While families deal with a sudden loss, a wrongful death lawyer can handle the legal process and insurance communications. An attorney can also collect records, review evidence, and prepare a claim based on the facts. This support lets families focus on their loved ones.
