Waipahu, HI – Three Hospitalized After House Fire on Awalai St

February 27, 2026

Waipahu, HI (February 27, 2026) – On Thursday afternoon, February 27, at approximately 1:37 p.m., emergency crews responded to a residential fire that resulted in injuries along Awalai Street.

Firefighters arrived near 94-1048 Awalai Street to find a small, single-story home heavily engulfed in flames, with thick smoke pouring from the structure. The home’s carport had partially collapsed due to the intensity of the fire. As flames spread to the exteriors of two neighboring houses, the situation escalated to a third-alarm fire shortly after crews arrived.

First responders treated three individuals at the scene for possible smoke inhalation. A 39-year-old woman, a 75-year-old woman, and a 79-year-old man were evaluated after experiencing breathing difficulties. Emergency medical personnel transported all three to a nearby hospital in stable condition for further care.

Firefighters conducted a thorough search of the primary residence to ensure no one remained inside. While no additional occupants were found, crews successfully rescued two pet dogs and one tortoise from the property. The fire affecting all three homes was fully extinguished at approximately 3:58 p.m.

In total, 17 adults were displaced as a result of the fire. The American Red Cross responded to assist those impacted. A fire investigator is currently working to determine the cause and origin of the blaze. Damage estimates for the affected properties will be released once the investigation is complete.

We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured in this incident.

What to Do After a Residential Fire in Waipahu

Experiencing a house fire can be overwhelming and traumatic. If you or a loved one is affected by a residential fire in Waipahu or elsewhere on Oahu, consider taking the following steps to protect your health and your rights:

  1. Check for injuries: Seek immediate medical attention for anyone exposed to smoke or flames. Even mild breathing issues can worsen over time. Facilities such as The Queen’s Medical Center – West O‘ahu or Straub Medical Center can provide evaluation and treatment.
  2. Ensure safety: Do not re-enter a damaged structure until fire officials confirm it is safe. Structural damage and hidden hot spots may pose serious risks.
  3. Contact emergency services: Make sure the incident is documented by the fire and police authorities. Official reports can be important for insurance and housing assistance claims.
  4. Document the damage: Take photos or videos of all affected areas, including structural damage and personal property loss, once authorities allow safe access.
  5. Notify your insurance provider: Report the fire as soon as possible and provide accurate information regarding losses and temporary housing needs.
  6. Seek temporary assistance: Organizations such as the American Red Cross may provide emergency shelter, food, clothing, and support services.
  7. Consult a Honolulu personal injury attorney: If negligence, faulty wiring, landlord issues, or another party’s actions may have contributed to the fire, an attorney can help you understand your legal options and pursue compensation for medical expenses, property damage, and displacement costs.

If you or someone you love was injured in a residential fire in Waipahu or anywhere in Honolulu, you do not have to navigate the aftermath alone. A Honolulu personal injury attorney can help you understand your rights, manage insurance claims, and seek fair compensation for medical treatment, relocation expenses, lost income, and emotional distress.
