Maui, HI – Three Hurt in Rollover Accident on Hono Hwy at Kekaa Dr

August 25, 2025

Maui, HI (August 25, 2025) – Three men were hospitalized following a rollover crash in Kaanapali on August 24, according to the Maui Police Department (MPD).

Police said an SUV was traveling north on Honoapiilani Highway when it drifted left across the solid white lane lines and partially entered the left-turn lane for Kekaa Drive. The vehicle struck several delineators before the 18-year-old driver overcorrected to the right toward a shoulder embankment, causing the SUV to roll over multiple times before coming to rest on its passenger side.

The driver was ejected from the SUV and transported to the hospital in critical condition. Two passengers, both 18-year-old men—one from Wailuku and one from Waihee—were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Investigators said alcohol was a factor in the crash, while speed and drugs have not yet been determined as contributing causes. The inquiry remains ongoing, however.

Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their families. We hope for their full recovery.

Rollover Auto Accidents in Hawaii

Rollover accidents are among the most dangerous types of vehicle collisions, often resulting in catastrophic injuries, fatalities, and extensive property damage. In Hawaii, where highways, winding roads, and sudden weather changes create challenging driving conditions, rollover crashes are a serious public safety concern.

These accidents frequently occur due to high-speed driving, sharp turns, or sudden evasive maneuvers. Vehicles such as SUVs, pickup trucks, and vans are especially prone to rollovers because of their higher center of gravity. Contributing factors may also include poor road conditions, hazardous weather, tire blowouts, or collisions with other vehicles.

In some cases, defective vehicle designs or inadequate safety features—such as weak roofs or failing airbags—can worsen the outcome for those involved.

Because of the violent nature of rollover crashes, victims often suffer traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, crushed limbs, internal bleeding, or wrongful death. Survivors may face long hospital stays, multiple surgeries, rehabilitation, and long-term medical needs, leaving families struggling with financial and emotional burdens.

Liability in rollover accidents can be complex. While driver negligence, such as speeding, distraction, or impaired driving, often plays a role, other parties may also be responsible. Vehicle manufacturers may be held liable if a design flaw—like instability or roof collapse—contributed to the crash.

Government agencies may face responsibility if dangerous road conditions, unmarked curves, or poor maintenance caused or worsened the rollover. Determining fault requires a thorough investigation of the crash scene, vehicle records, and safety features, often with the assistance of accident reconstruction specialists.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a rollover crash in Hawaii, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, vehicle repairs, pain and suffering, and long-term care needs. Pursuing a claim without legal representation can be overwhelming, especially as insurance companies often try to minimize payouts in these high-cost cases.
