Engine 1/Maui firefighters also responded to the scene, as well as EMTs, but it’s unclear the total and final number of individuals who were hurt in the incident. Our thoughts are with the injured victims. We hope for their full and fast recovery.
Truck Accidents in Hawaii
Like other states, there are traffic regulations and rules in Hawaii specifically for commercial truck travel. This is due to the fact that tractor-trailers are often approximately 20 to 30 times heavier than passenger vehicles. This poses an apparent threat of serious injuries or fatalities for those who may become involved in a traffic accident with them.
Reports made by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration show that roughly 450,000 collisions involving 18-wheelers occur every year in the United States. These accidents cause around 5,000 fatalities and countless injuries. Of all of the deaths that occur each year related to truck accidents, only 15% are truck drivers. The occupants of passenger vehicles make up 72% of fatalities. The remaining 13% are pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists.
Approximately 20% of all commercial truck crashes are caused by negligence displayed by the truck driver, such as:
- Driving while over-tired/exhausted
- Driving while intoxicated
- Driving with unsecured/improperly secured freight
- Driving while the trailer is unbalanced or overloaded
