Makakilo, HI – Two Seriously Injured in Rollover Crash at Makakilo Dr & Kinohi Pl

May 8, 2026

Makakilo, HI (May 8, 2026) – A serious crash left one vehicle on its roof and sent two people to the hospital near the intersection of Makakilo Drive and Kinohi Place on Wednesday, May 6, at approximately 10:30 a.m. One of the vehicles involved also struck a tree during the accident.

Honolulu Medical Services transported a 61-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman to the hospital in serious condition following the collision. Three other people at the scene were evaluated by emergency units but declined further medical care. The identities of those involved have not been released.

Authorities have not confirmed what caused the crash or released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the accident. The incident remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the two individuals seriously injured in this crash as they receive care and work toward recovery.

How Do I File a Car Insurance Claim in Hawaii?

After a car accident in Hawaii, you should notify your insurance company as soon as possible and begin the claims process by providing basic details about the crash. Hawaii follows a no-fault insurance system, which means your own personal injury protection coverage, known as PIP, pays for your initial medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who caused the collision.

Hawaii requires all registered vehicle owners to carry a minimum of $10,000 in PIP coverage. After a crash, your PIP coverage activates first and covers reasonable medical costs and a portion of lost income up to that limit. You file this claim directly with your own insurer, not the other driver’s. This process applies even if the other driver was clearly at fault for the accident. Understanding this distinction helps avoid confusion and delays when seeking medical care after a collision.

Once you decide to file a claim, your insurer will ask for basic information about the crash. You should be prepared to provide the date, time, and location of the accident, a description of what happened, the names and insurance details of all drivers involved, a copy of the police report if one was filed, and photographs of the scene and vehicle damage. Organizing this information early makes the process smoother and reduces back-and-forth with your insurance company.

Hawaii’s no-fault system limits your ability to sue the other driver in most cases. However, if your injuries are serious enough — such as significant disfigurement, permanent loss of a bodily function, or injuries requiring surgery — you may step outside the no-fault system and file a claim directly against the at-fault driver. A car accident attorney can review your injuries and explain whether your situation meets that threshold under Hawaii law.

It is also worth noting that Hawaii has a two-year statute of limitations for personal injury claims. This means an injured person generally has two years from the date of the accident to file a lawsuit against an at-fault driver. Missing this deadline can eliminate the right to seek compensation through the courts entirely. Starting the process early gives an attorney time to gather evidence, review medical records, and build a complete picture of what happened.
