Honolulu, HI – Man Critically Hurt in Pedestrian Crash on S King St

June 8, 2025

Honolulu, HI (June 8, 2025) – A man in his 50s was critically injured early Saturday morning, June 7, after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in Moʻiliʻili, near the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the crash occurred around 3 a.m. on South King Street, near its intersection with University Avenue. The pedestrian was reportedly in a marked crosswalk and had the right of way when a vehicle traveling eastbound struck him.

After hitting the man, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked, unoccupied car, which was then pushed into another parked vehicle. Rather than stopping, the motorist fled the scene, last seen heading east on South King Street.

Emergency Medical Services responded quickly and transported the injured man—estimated to be around 55 years old—to a trauma center in critical condition. Authorities said his identity had not been confirmed as of Saturday morning.

Speed is believed to have contributed to the crash. Police have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

We hope for the full recovery of the injured victim.

Hawaii Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable people on Hawaii’s roads, with little to no physical protection when struck by a motor vehicle. Even low-speed collisions can lead to devastating injuries, especially when the impact involves a larger, heavier vehicle like a car or SUV. Sadly, many of these incidents are entirely preventable—and often caused by driver negligence. Common contributing factors in pedestrian accidents include:

  • Impaired driving – Motorists under the influence of alcohol or drugs often have delayed reaction times, poor judgment, and an inability to properly follow traffic signals or yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Distracted driving – One of the most frequent causes of pedestrian accidents, distraction behind the wheel can stem from texting, talking on the phone, eating, or even interacting with other passengers. A split-second lapse in attention can change a life forever.
  • Aggressive or reckless driving – Drivers who speed, fail to yield, run red lights, or ignore crosswalks put pedestrians in serious danger. When motorists don’t exercise caution—especially in high-foot-traffic areas—the consequences can be tragic.
