Hanalei, HI – Three Killed, Two Injured After Helicopter Crash at Kalalau Beach on Kauai

March 27, 2026

Hanalei, HI (March 27, 2026) – On Thursday afternoon, March 26, a tragic helicopter crash occurred at Kalalau Beach along the Na Pali Coast on the island of Kauai, resulting in multiple casualties.

According to the Kauai Fire Department, the aircraft was carrying one pilot and four passengers at the time of the crash. Authorities confirmed that three individuals lost their lives as a result of the incident, while two others sustained injuries.

The injured victims were transported to Wilcox Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. Their current conditions have not yet been released.

Due to the remote nature of Kalalau Beach, which is accessible only by hiking or boat, rescue efforts required coordination among multiple agencies. Local police, fire crews, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene to assist with emergency operations and ensure the safe transport of victims.

Officials identified the helicopter as being operated by Airborne Aviation, a company known for providing sightseeing tours over Kauai’s coastline, canyons, and waterfalls.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation by local authorities. Contributing factors such as weather conditions, mechanical issues, or operational challenges have not yet been determined.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wish a full recovery to the injured victims.

Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim in Hanalei

When a fatal accident occurs in Hanalei, certain family members or legal representatives may have the right to file a wrongful death claim. This type of legal action seeks compensation for losses resulting from the untimely death of a loved one.

Under Hawaii law, the following parties may typically be eligible to file a wrongful death claim:

  • Immediate family members: The surviving spouse, children, or parents of the deceased are usually the primary individuals entitled to pursue a claim.
  • Dependents: In some cases, individuals who were financially dependent on the deceased may also have the right to seek compensation.
  • Personal representative of the estate: A court-appointed representative may file a claim on behalf of the deceased’s estate and surviving beneficiaries.

Wrongful death claims can seek compensation for a variety of damages, including: Funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support and future earnings, loss of companionship, care, and guidance, and medical expenses related to the fatal injury

To pursue a wrongful death claim, it is generally necessary to demonstrate that another party’s negligence or wrongful actions caused or contributed to the fatal incident. This may involve gathering evidence such as accident reports, witness statements, expert analysis, and medical documentation.

Because these claims can be complex and time-sensitive, families need to understand their legal rights and options. Acting promptly can help preserve critical evidence and ensure that all filing deadlines are met.
