What to Do After a Car Accident in Honolulu County
Being involved in a car accident can be overwhelming, especially when injuries occur or multiple vehicles are involved. In the moments following a crash, remaining calm and taking deliberate steps can make a major difference for your health, safety, and ability to recover compensation later.
The priority should always be safety. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries and move to a safe location away from traffic if possible. If someone is hurt, do not attempt to move them unless there is immediate danger, and call 911 right away to request medical and police assistance. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it is essential to undergo a medical evaluation. Some conditions, such as internal bleeding or soft-tissue injuries, may not show symptoms immediately but can worsen without treatment.
Next, exchange information with other drivers, including names, contact details, and insurance information. You should also collect the license plate numbers and vehicle descriptions. If there are witnesses nearby, politely ask for their contact information, as their statements could support your account of what happened.
While waiting for law enforcement to arrive, take photos or videos of the accident scene, including vehicle damage, road conditions, and any visible injuries. These details can be critical when filing an insurance claim or seeking compensation through a personal injury case. Avoid admitting fault or discussing the details of the crash with anyone except the police or your attorney.
Once the scene has been cleared, contact your insurance company to report the incident as soon as possible. Provide accurate information, but avoid making speculative statements about the cause of the crash. If you require ongoing medical care or face challenges with insurance coverage, consulting with a car accident lawyer in Honolulu can help protect your rights.
