Lahaina, HI – Fatal Bicycle Accident on Honoapiilani Hwy near Fleming Rd

October 17, 2025

Lahaina, HI (October 17, 2025) – On Thursday morning, October 16, a 48-year-old man died after his bicycle was struck by an SUV near Fleming Road on Honoapiilani Highway in Lahaina.

Emergency responders, including Maui Police Department and Maui Fire Department units, arrived promptly at the scene to assist. Authorities reported that a 52-year-old woman driving the SUV collided with the bicyclist as he turned left. The impact threw the rider onto the roadway, leaving him critically injured. He was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where, unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver remained at the scene and was unharmed.

Police noted that the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, while the driver was wearing a seat belt. The vehicle’s airbags did not deploy. The circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family members during this difficult time.

Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents in Maui

Bicycle accidents in Maui often occur due to a combination of road conditions, driver behavior, and cyclist actions. One of the most frequent causes is driver inattention or distraction. Drivers using phones, adjusting radios, or otherwise diverting their attention may fail to notice cyclists sharing the roadway.

Failure to yield is another major factor. Intersections, turns, and crosswalks can be especially dangerous when motorists do not properly yield to bicyclists or when cyclists misjudge traffic flow. In this particular incident, the victim was turning left, which is a common scenario for collisions.

Road hazards also contribute to accidents. Uneven pavement, potholes, debris, or poorly marked lanes can cause cyclists to lose control or force sudden swerves into vehicle lanes. Additionally, visibility issues, such as low light conditions, sharp curves, or obstructed views, make it harder for both drivers and cyclists to anticipate each other.

Cyclists themselves can unintentionally increase risk if they ride against traffic, ignore traffic signals, or fail to use lights and reflective gear at night. Not wearing helmets, while not a cause of the accident itself, can significantly worsen injuries during a crash.

Understanding these common causes highlights the importance of vigilance, adherence to traffic laws, and protective equipment. Awareness of how accidents happen can help both drivers and cyclists prevent future tragedies on Maui roads.
