Kihei, HI – 79-Year-Old Man Injured in E-Bike Crash at Kanani Rd & Auhana Rd

October 23, 2025

Kihei, HI (October 23, 2025) – A violent crash left a 79-year-old man critically injured after his electric bike collided with a pickup truck on Tuesday morning, October 21, in Kihei. The collision happened around 7:22 a.m. at the intersection of Kanani Road and Auhana Road, according to the Maui Police Department.

Investigators said a white 2024 Ford F-150 was driving east on Kanani Road when the driver tried to make a left turn toward the highway. At that moment, the man on an electric-assisted bicycle was traveling west through the same intersection. The truck turned directly into his path, hitting him hard and throwing him onto the pavement.

Emergency crews arrived within minutes. Paramedics treated the victim at the scene before rushing him to Maui Memorial Medical Center. Doctors confirmed that his injuries are life-threatening and will require extensive treatment.

The 40-year-old driver stayed at the scene and was taken into custody for first-degree negligent injury. He was processed at the Wailuku Police Station and later released pending further investigation.

Authorities confirmed that everyone inside the truck wore seatbelts and did not suffer injuries. Officers said speed does not appear to be a factor, but they are still determining whether alcohol or drugs played a role.

The Maui Police Department continues to investigate the crash.

We wish the injured man a full and swift recovery.

Electric Bike Accidents in Hawaii

Electric bikes are becoming more popular across Hawaii, especially in areas like Kihei, where short-distance travel is common. Unfortunately, as the number of e-bikes grows, so do the risks. Drivers often fail to recognize the speed and presence of e-bikes, especially when turning or crossing intersections.

E-bike riders are vulnerable in collisions. Without the protection of a car frame, even a minor impact can cause severe injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord damage, or internal bleeding. These injuries can change a person’s life instantly, leaving victims facing long recoveries and overwhelming medical costs.

Victims of serious bike crashes may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses, including surgeries and rehabilitation
  • Lost wages and loss of future income
  • Pain and suffering caused by physical and emotional trauma
  • Property damage
  • Long-term care or disability support

Recovering after a catastrophic crash is never easy. Victims often face emotional distress and financial pressure while trying to heal. Managing medical bills, insurance companies, and legal paperwork can make the process even harder.
