Kihei, HI – 79-Year-Old Cyclist Dies After Crash at Kanani Rd & Auhana Rd
October 26, 2025
Kihei, HI (October 26, 2025) – A 79-year-old man from Kihei died on Friday, October 25, two days after a crash involving an electric-assisted bicycle and a pickup truck. The collision occurred around 7:22 a.m. on Wednesday, October 23, at the intersection of Kanani Road and Auhana Road, according to the Maui Police Department.
Authorities said a white 2024 Ford F-150 was heading east on Kanani Road and attempted to make a left turn toward the highway when it collided with an electric-assisted bicycle traveling west on Auhana Road. The impact threw the cyclist onto the pavement, leaving him with catastrophic injuries. Paramedics treated him at the scene before rushing him to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he passed away two days later.
The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old Kihei man, remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He was later arrested for first-degree negligent injury and released pending investigation. The truck’s three passengers were not injured, and all occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The Maui Police Department stated that speed did not appear to be a factor, but investigators are still reviewing whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this heartbreaking time.
Fatal Bicycle Accidents in Hawaii
Bicycle accidents in Hawaii can be devastating, especially when larger vehicles are involved. Busy intersections, like Kanani Road and Auhana Road in Kihei, can be dangerous for cyclists due to constant traffic and limited visibility. Even a moment of distraction behind the wheel can lead to devastating consequences.
Cyclists have little protection in a collision, and the injuries they suffer are often catastrophic. Families are left to deal with sudden grief, emotional pain, and the financial strain that follows a fatal crash. These losses can feel overwhelming and unfair, especially when negligence caused the accident.
Families may be entitled to compensation for:
- Medical expenses incurred before death
- Funeral and burial costs
- Lost income and financial support
- Pain and suffering endured by the victim
- Loss of companionship and emotional support
Insurance companies often try to minimize payouts or shift blame after a fatal crash. That’s why having strong legal representation is crucial. A skilled wrongful death lawyer can investigate the collision, gather evidence, and ensure that you receive the justice and compensation you deserve.
At Leavitt, Yamane & Soldner, we understand how devastating losing a loved one can be. We help families across Hawaii seek justice, peace, and financial recovery after life-changing losses.
