Kauaʻi, HI – Teen Badly Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Crash at Kaumualii Hwy & Omao Rd

March 16, 2026

Kauaʻi, HI (March 16, 2026) – A serious multi-vehicle accident on the island of Kauaʻi left a teenager critically injured after a chain-reaction crash near a busy highway intersection.

Police said the crash happened around 7 a.m. on Monday, March 16, at the intersection of Kaumualii Highway and Omao Road. According to investigators, a Toyota sedan was attempting to turn left onto the highway when it was struck by an eastbound Toyota pickup truck.

After the first impact, the truck lost control and crossed into the opposite lane of traffic. A second Toyota truck traveling in that lane then hit the out-of-control vehicle, creating a three-vehicle crash at the intersection.

Emergency units arrived and found a teenage driver from one of the trucks with critical injuries. Paramedics rushed the teen to a nearby hospital, and the victim was later airlifted to another medical center for advanced treatment.

Authorities said the other people involved in the accident did not suffer serious injuries. Officers briefly restricted traffic in the area while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence.

Police continue to review the circumstances that led to the crash.

Our thoughts are with the injured teen and all those affected as they continue their recovery.

Your Rights After a Car Crash in Kauaʻi

After a car crash in Kauaʻi, remember that Hawaiʻi follows a no-fault insurance system, which means that your own auto insurance policy typically pays for your initial medical expenses and certain other losses after a crash, regardless of who caused the accident. This coverage is known as Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and is required for all drivers in the state.

Under Hawaiʻi law, PIP benefits can help cover medical treatment, rehabilitation costs, and, in some cases, lost income resulting from injuries suffered in a crash.

However, there are limits to what PIP will pay. If injuries are serious and meet certain legal thresholds, such as significant permanent injury or medical expenses that exceed the state’s minimum limit, you may have the right to step outside the no-fault system and pursue a claim against the at-fault driver.

After an accident, you have the right to seek medical attention and document your injuries. Medical records, crash reports, and witness statements can all play an important role in understanding what happened and determining liability.

Hawaiʻi also places time limits on filing injury claims, known as statutes of limitations. You have two years from the date of the injury to file a lawsuit, so taking timely action is important.

Last but not least, you have the right, but not the obligation, to consult with a personal injury attorney. This can be of great help, since a lawyer can explain how Hawaiʻi’s insurance rules apply, help review available evidence, and guide you through the claims process while you focus on recovery.
