June 20, 2025
Honolulu, HI (June 20, 2025) – Honolulu police said a 74-year-old woman who was struck in a crosswalk on June 17 by a hit-and-run driver has died.
Police said the pedestrian was struck by an “unidentified motorist” as she was trying to cross Makaloa Street at Kaheka Street in the Ala Moana area at about 12:10 p.m. Tuesday. The driver fled in an unknown direction, according to the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division. The woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office notified HPD on Friday that she had “succumbed to her injuries,” police said. However, no further details have been released at this time, and the incident remains under investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased woman’s loved ones.
Pedestrian Collisions in Hawaii
Regrettably, pedestrian accidents are typically a result of drivers who fail to follow traffic laws. When it comes to drivers being distracted, texting and driving is becoming a severe problem in the United States, causing millions of accidents and injuries per year. Over the last year, over 7,000 pedestrians lost their lives in car accidents across the country. Careless drivers caused the majority of these collisions.
What’s more, pedestrians are more likely to suffer severe and fatal injuries and accidents because they do not have protection during accidents. As a result, they suffer significant trauma to the head, internal organ injuries, and other injuries that can ultimately take their lives. The sudden and unexpected loss of a loved one due to a fatal collision can be incredibly difficult to deal with.
