Honolulu, HI – Serious Injuries in 3-Car Crash on Nimitz Hwy at Waiakamilo Rd

August 17, 2025

Honolulu, HI (August 17, 2025) – At least one person sustained severe injuries in a three-car collision that took place in Kalihi on Saturday afternoon, August 16. The crash happened at the intersection of Waiakamilo Road and Nimitz Highway.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, one of the vehicles overturned and landed on the median after the impact. First responders rushed to the scene and found one or more victims trapped inside the damaged vehicles. Firefighters and paramedics worked quickly to free those inside, providing immediate medical care before transporting them to nearby hospitals.

Rescue crews closed two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane to clear debris and tow the wrecked vehicles from the highway.

The Honolulu Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the crash. More information is expected as updates become available.

Our thoughts are with those affected by the crash during this difficult time.

Car Accidents in Hawaii

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of serious injuries in Honolulu. Intersections such as Nimitz Highway and Waiakamilo Road are particularly hazardous due to heavy traffic flow, frequent lane changes, and constant merging.

The causes behind these collisions vary, but the most common factors include speeding, impaired driving, driver fatigue, and distracted driving. The rise of smartphones and other devices has made distraction one of the most dangerous contributors to crashes. A single glance away from the road at a busy intersection can have devastating consequences.

Hawaii records hundreds of severe crashes each year, many of which result in catastrophic harm. Victims often suffer spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, or internal trauma. Rollovers, like the one that occurred on Nimitz Highway, can be especially dangerous. When a vehicle flips, its roof and frame can collapse, leaving occupants with lasting or permanent disabilities. Survivors often require long hospital stays, extensive rehabilitation, and lifelong medical care.

The toll of these accidents extends beyond physical harm. Families suddenly find themselves facing overwhelming financial stress from medical bills, lost wages, and the costs of long-term care. Emotional trauma can also weigh heavily, particularly for those adjusting to permanent disabilities or for loved ones who must become full-time caregivers.
