Honolulu, HI – Pedestrian Critically Injured in Crash at Kuhio Ave & Royal Hawaiian Ave

August 17, 2025

Honolulu, HI (August 17, 2025) – A 57-year-old man is in critical condition after a bus struck him on Friday, August 15.

The crash occurred around 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of Kuhio Avenue and Royal Hawaiian Avenue. The Honolulu Police Department reported that the 57-year-old pedestrian was walking east on the sidewalk when he tripped and fell into the roadway. A transit bus traveling through the intersection struck him shortly after.

Paramedics responded quickly, providing treatment at the scene before transporting the victim to a nearby hospital. His condition was first described as serious and later worsened to critical.

Authorities confirmed that the 56-year-old bus driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Honolulu police added that speed, alcohol, and drugs are not believed to have played a role in the crash.

The Honolulu Police Department continues to investigate what led to the incident.

Our thoughts are with the victim and his loved ones during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents in Honolulu

Honolulu records some of the highest pedestrian crash numbers in Hawaii, largely because of its crowded streets and steady flow of visitors. The heavy mix of traffic and people on foot creates more chances for dangerous collisions. State reports show that every year, dozens of pedestrians in Hawaii are seriously injured or killed in traffic accidents.

The causes of these incidents vary. Poor visibility, heavy traffic, driver distraction, and pedestrian congestion all play a role. Even a simple fall, as seen in this recent crash, can place someone directly in harm’s way when vehicles are close by. The consequences are often devastating.

Victims of pedestrian accidents frequently suffer catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain damage, spinal cord trauma, and severe fractures. These injuries can require long-term treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing medical care, leaving victims and their families facing immense financial and emotional challenges.

If you suffered a catastrophic injury in Honolulu, you may have the right to seek compensation for your losses. Medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, and future rehabilitation costs are among the damages that can be recovered. However, pursuing these claims can be difficult without skilled legal help.

A Honolulu pedestrian accident lawyer can guide you through the process of gathering evidence, handling insurance negotiations, and pursuing justice in court if necessary.
