Honolulu, HI – Fatal Rollover Crash on H-1 Fwy Near Vineyard Off-Ramp

December 5, 2025

Honolulu, HI (December 5, 2025 ) –On Thursday, December 4, a tragic collision on the H-1 Freeway turned deadly, prompting a major emergency response and shutting down all westbound lanes for several hours.

According to Honolulu Police, the crash happened just before 6 p.m. in the westbound lanes past the Vineyard off-ramp. Investigators say a 22-year-old male driver was speeding when he struck another vehicle. The impact caused his vehicle to overturn, ejecting him onto the roadway.

Emergency Medical Services transported the young man to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. Four occupants of the other vehicle, a 66-year-old male driver, a 44-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman, and a young boy, sustained minor injuries. All refused medical treatment at the scene.

Police say speed appears to be a contributing factor in the collision. The crash forced the closure of all westbound lanes as police investigated and crews worked to clear the overturned vehicle. The freeway was fully reopened at around 9:30 p.m.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family members, and we also hope the others injured make a full recovery.

Types of Compensation in Honolulu Crashes

In Honolulu, victims of traffic collisions may be eligible for several types of compensation depending on the circumstances of the crash and the severity of injuries.

  • Economic Damages: Economic compensation covers measurable financial losses caused by the accident. This includes medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, property damage, and diminished earning capacity. For example, if a driver requires emergency care and follow-up treatment after a crash on the H-1, economic damages help reimburse these direct expenses.
  • Non-Economic Damages: Non-economic damages address intangible but significant impacts, such as pain and suffering, emotional distress, mental anguish, or loss of enjoyment of life. In Hawaii, courts recognize that serious crashes can leave lasting psychological effects, even when physical injuries are minor. These damages are more subjective and are evaluated based on the long-term impact on the victim’s daily life.
  • Punitive Damages: Punitive damages are less common but may be awarded in cases involving reckless or egregious behavior, such as excessive speeding or driving under the influence. These damages are meant to punish the at-fault party and deter similar misconduct in the future. They are not tied to specific financial losses but serve a broader public purpose.

Understanding the differences among these types of compensation can help injured individuals pursue a comprehensive claim that reflects both their financial losses and the broader consequences of the crash. If you or a loved one has been injured in a traffic accident in Honolulu, you don’t have to navigate the aftermath alone.
