Honolulu, HI – Fatal Moped Crash on Kaneohe Bay Dr Near Mokulele Dr

September 10, 2025

Honolulu, HI (September 10, 2025) – A deadly crash on Windward Oahu claimed the life of a moped rider on Monday, September 8. The collision happened around 7:00 a.m. on Kaneohe Bay Drive near Mokulele Drive, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

Investigators said a 52-year-old woman was riding her moped eastbound when a 79-year-old man struck her from behind. The impact threw her onto the right shoulder of the road, where another vehicle struck her before she could move to safety.

First responders arrived within minutes and provided urgent medical care. Despite their efforts, she died at the scene. Authorities confirmed she wore a helmet at the time of the crash.

The drivers of the other vehicles did not suffer injuries and remained at the site. Police said neither speed, alcohol, nor drugs appear to have caused the collision.

This marks the 59th traffic death in Oahu this year, compared to 29 at the same time last year.

The Hawaii Police Department continues to review the events leading to the tragedy.

We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Fatal Moped Accidents in Hawaii

Moped accidents in Hawaii are both common and often catastrophic. In Honolulu, riders rely on mopeds for daily travel through tight streets and heavy traffic. While convenient, mopeds provide little protection. When struck by a larger vehicle, the rider almost always suffers the worst injuries.

Fatal crashes, like the one on Kaneohe Bay Drive, highlight the dangers. Even when riders wear helmets, the force of a collision can cause brain trauma, spinal cord damage, or fatal internal injuries. Families are left grieving, while survivors face months or years of medical care.

Statistics show that moped riders are among the most vulnerable on Hawaii’s roads. The Hawaii Police Department frequently reports cases involving severe injuries or deaths, especially on busy routes in Honolulu. Each accident brings not just physical pain, but also emotional and financial hardship.

For families, the aftermath of a fatal accident can feel overwhelming. Funeral expenses, medical bills, and sudden loss of income place enormous strain on loved ones. Insurance companies often try to settle claims quickly, offering far less than families truly need. Without strong legal guidance, victims and their families risk being left without the resources required for recovery and stability.
