Hilo, HI – Infant Dies After Head-On Crash on Daniel K Inouye Hwy

October 29, 2025

Hilo, HI (October 29, 2025) – A three-week-old baby girl who was critically injured in a devastating head-on collision last week died on Monday evening, October 27.

The tragic crash occurred on Thursday afternoon, October 23, around 4:30 p.m. on Daniel K. Inouye Highway, also known as Saddle Road, in Hawaii County. Investigators said a 2022 Toyota pickup traveling east attempted to overtake several vehicles when it collided head-on with a 2014 Subaru heading west. The impact was violent, crushing both vehicles and scattering debris across the highway.

Crews arrived within minutes and worked urgently to rescue multiple victims trapped inside the Subaru. Inside the vehicle were two adults, a 47-year-old woman, a 17-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, and the infant. The 47-year-old woman suffered catastrophic injuries and later died. The infant was taken to the hospital in critical condition but died days later despite intensive treatment.

The 43-year-old driver of the Toyota, a man from Kurtistown, sustained severe injuries. Paramedics transported him to Hilo Benioff Medical Center before airlifting him to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for advanced trauma care. He remains in serious condition as of this week.

Officials spent several hours at the crash site, analyzing skid marks, damaged vehicles, and road debris. Officers believe speed and possibly alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision, though the exact cause remains under review. The Hawaii Police Department is leading the investigation and urges anyone with information to come forward.

We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families during this difficult time. Our hearts are also with the injured driver, and we wish him a full and swift recovery.
