What Compensation May Be Available After a Fatal Hit-and-Run in Waipahu, HI?
Families may have legal options after losing a loved one in a fatal hit-and-run crash. Depending on the circumstances, an eligible family member may be able to seek compensation for certain financial and personal losses connected to the death.
The financial impact can begin with funeral and burial expenses, which may place an immediate burden on surviving family members. Beyond those costs, families may also face the loss of income and other contributions the deceased provided to the household. These losses may be considered when evaluating a potential claim.
Determining what happened can be more difficult when the driver leaves the scene and is not immediately identified. Information from the crash, witness accounts, available video, vehicle damage, and medical records may help establish what occurred and document the losses that followed.
When the responsible driver cannot be located, insurance coverage may provide another potential source of compensation. Depending on the available policies and circumstances, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may apply to certain losses. Reviewing the applicable policies can help clarify what coverage may be available.
As the claim develops, a wrongful death or a personal injury lawyer can review the available information and explain what legal options may apply. An attorney may also help identify relevant insurance coverage and organize documentation related to funeral expenses, lost income, and other losses.
