June 8, 2022
Wailua, HI (June 08, 2022) – One firefighter was injured in an explosion that occurred during a house fire on Tuesday, June 7th.
According to sources, at about 10:20 a.m., fire crews responded to reports of a home on fire on Molo Street in Wailua.
Upon their arrival, responders observed smoke coming from the residence. After gaining access to the house, they had to move a kitchen appliance in order to reach the gas shutoff valve. For reasons still under investigation, an explosion took place that set the kitchen, the appliance, and the gas line on fire, resulting in injuries to one responder who was hospitalized in non-critical condition.
It took about two and a half hours for firefighters to contain the situation. Damage has been estimated at around $6,000.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Fire-Related Injuries in Hawaii
While the furthest thing from a physician’s mind when they are treating fire-related injuries is the expense, the cost of the treatments is almost certainly a major concern for the patient. The average medical bills for someone who is moderately injured in a fire are somewhere in the neighborhood of $200,000.
Additionally, this total fails to take into consideration the numerous other financial burdens they will face, including lost wages, reduced earning capacity, multiple reconstructive surgeries for physical scarring, and the various support services designed to help them cope with emotional scarring caused by the event.
Obtaining compensation for these not-inconsiderable expenses, along with pain, suffering, and other intangible losses, does not happen automatically, and, leaving your fate in the hands of an insurance company will most likely see you burned a second time.
