Mountain View, HI (August 24, 2026) – Emergency crews and Hawaii County Police Department officers responded on Saturday morning, August 22, to a severe vehicle accident involving a child. The incident occurred in the driveway of a residence along the 11-3000 block of Hibiscus Street at approximately 10:00 a.m.
According to preliminary reports, a 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck occupied by a 17-year-old female driver and two young boys, ages 6 and 3, was parked in the driveway when it was inadvertently shifted into neutral gear. The vehicle rolled backward down the driveway, striking a 3-year-old girl who was walking behind the truck.
The rolling pickup truck continued past the initial impact, striking an unoccupied parked vehicle before coming to a complete stop against a tree.
Paramedics stabilized the toddler and transported her in critical condition to Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Due to the severity of her injuries, emergency medical flight crews subsequently medevaced the child to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children on Oahu for specialized care.
