Puna, HI – Bizarre Pedestrian Crash Kills Driver, Injures Pedestrian on Kahakai Blvd

January 4, 2023

Puna, HI (January 4, 2023) – Police on Hawaii Island are currently investigating a strange accident that occurred in Puna. One driver lost their life, and an unidentified pedestrian suffered injuries. The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30.

Police identified the deceased driver as Ryan Kuualoha Kaawaloa, 53. Officers determined that a green multi-purpose Chevrolet was headed east on Kahakai Boulevard when it hit a pedestrian who was walking along the roadway.

Witness statements reveal Kaawaloa was involved in an altercation with the pedestrian after the accident. The unidentified pedestrian fled the scene but was picked up by a black, full-sized pickup truck before police arrived.

Authorities report the man, identified as a young male with brown curly hair, may still be injured and in need of medical attention.

Police reported Kaawaloa was conscious and leaning against his vehicle when they arrived, just before complaining of chest pain and collapsing to the ground. He then became unresponsive.

Kaawaloa was then transported to Hilo Medical Center just before 11:00 p.m. He was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Authorities in Puna are still investigating the details of the accident.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim. We hope for the full recovery of the injured party.

Hawaii Car Accidents

In the United States, pedestrian accidents are often caused by drivers who act negligently. Driver distraction is one of the most common reasons these accidents occur. The act of texting and driving has become more problematic in the past ten years or so. In 2020, over 7,000 pedestrians were killed in pedestrian crashes in the US. In the past decade, pedestrian accidents have risen by approximately 54% throughout the country.

Due to traveling mostly unprotected, pedestrians are usually severely injured when they become involved in traffic collisions. More than half of the time, pedestrians sustain severe or even deadly injuries in auto accidents.

Pedestrian collisions happen for an array of different reasons. Driver negligence is the main concern, causing more traffic accidents than anything else in the US. When you or a loved one sustains injuries in a pedestrian crash, you may greatly benefit from the help of a car crash lawyer.

Many people in the United States are put in harm’s way by unlawful and negligent driver behaviors. Pedestrians and cyclists are among the most at risk. When the person operating a potentially deadly vehicle takes their attention from the roadway, the chances of them causing severe injuries or taking a life are, unfortunately, very likely.

Some examples of negligence that lead to pedestrian collisions include poorly maintained vehicles, distracted driving, drunk/high driving, badly designed or poorly maintained intersections and roadways, and aggressive/reckless driving.

If you lost a loved one in a pedestrian crash caused by the negligence of another person, you deserve to be able to focus on your own emotional well-being and that of your family members, and you should be able to properly grieve.
