Vehicle Crashes in Hawaii
A leading cause of vehicle collisions throughout Hawaii is speeding. The state’s Department of Transportation has tried to decrease the number of speed-related crashes and associated fatalities by increasing the penalties imposed upon those cited for this unlawful act.
In spite of their best efforts, however, accidents continue to occur every day and often have long-lasting ramifications for injured victims and their families.
Hawaii is also working diligently to combat distracted driving, which is the number one cause of car accidents nationwide. The universality of smartphones and the ever-growing social media fervor have forever changed the way drivers behave behind the wheel.
Distracted driving has shown to be more dangerous than driving under the influence, a fact upheld by car accident data that show in 2012, police across the state issued more than 5,0000 citations associated with operating a vehicle while using a handheld electronic device.
