Oahu, HI – Motorcyclist Hospitalized After Collision on Mokapu Saddle Rd

September 8, 2024

Oahu, HI (September 8, 2024) – Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to three different overnight crashes that sent three people separately to the hospital in serious condition, including a motorcycle collision in the greater Oahu area.

The crash happened at 11:30 p.m. Saturday when a 19-year-old male on a motorcycle was involved in an accident near Mokapu Saddle Road. The man wore a helmet but suffered serious injuries in the incident and was rushed to a local hospital. It’s unclear if anybody else was hurt, and officers did not say how many vehicles were involved in the crash. That said, the area was closed for several hours pending the investigation, which remains active and ongoing in the hands of local law enforcement officials.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their family members in hopes of their full recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii

Unfortunately, motorcyclists are nearly entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which makes motorcycle riding extremely dangerous. The repercussions of a collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:

  • Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe vehicle control and experience impaired judgment.
  • Driver distraction: Many accidents occur on our roadways because drivers simply are not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
  • Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that harm others. Many accidents occur because drivers zip between lanes of travel, tailgate other vehicles, or are reckless while operating their cars.
