Oahu, HI – Motorcyclist Dies, Several Hurt in Crash on H-1

September 6, 2024

Oahu, HI (September 6, 2024) – On Thursday, September 5, officers with the Oahu Police Department reported that a 19-year-old male motorcyclist died from his injuries a few days following a multiple-vehicle crash involving five vehicles on the Interstate H-1 Freeway.

The crash happened on Sunday around 12:30 a.m. on the H-1 eastbound in the Aiea area. Officials reported the 19-year-old motorcyclist was traveling eastbound when he was involved in a collision with another motorcyclist, a 23-year-old male. They were both ejected onto the road. A 20-year-old male motorist stopped near the scene to assist.

Shortly thereafter, officials said an unidentified motorist struck the 19-year-old and his motorcycle, causing the bike to collide with the stopped vehicle. During the incident, a 20-year-old female motorcycle passenger was also struck by debris from the second collision but was listed in good condition at an area hospital.

The 20-year-old motorist and his two passengers were not injured, and the 23-year-old motorcyclist was taken to a nearby hospital in good condition. Police said the 19-year-old motorcyclist was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he died on Thursday. No further details were released in the interim, though charges or citations may be pending, per officers.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii

Unfortunately, motorcyclists are nearly entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which makes motorcycle riding extremely dangerous. The repercussions of a low-speed, relatively insignificant collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:

  • Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe vehicle control and experience impaired judgment.
  • Driver distraction: Many accidents occur on our roadways because drivers simply are not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
  • Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that harm others. Many accidents occur because drivers zip between lanes of travel, tailgate other vehicles, or are reckless while operating their cars.
