Car Accidents in Hawaii
Like other states in the United States, Hawaii has traffic regulations and rules specific to commercial trucks. This is because tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles are usually approximately 20 to 30 times larger than passenger vehicles posing a serious threat of severe injuries or death to anyone who becomes involved in a collision with them.
The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration reports that approximately 450,000 accidents involving semi-trucks happen each year in the U. These collisions result in approximately 5,000 deaths and numerous injuries. Of all of the fatalities that happen each year related to truck accidents, only 15% are truck operators themselves. The occupants of passenger vehicles make up 72% of fatalities. The remaining 13% are pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists.
Approximately 20% of all commercial truck crashes are caused by negligence displayed by the truck driver, such as:
- Driving while over-tired/exhausted
- Driving while intoxicated
- Driving with unsecured/improperly secured freight
- Driving while trailer is unbalanced or overloaded
Truck drivers who are responsible for actions due to their negligent actions are able to be held financially accountable for the injuries they cause. Trucking companies can also be held responsible for the negligent actions of their employees.
