Maui, HI – Woman Killed in Motorcycle Wreck on Honoapiilani Hwy

April 8, 2024

Maui, HI (April 8, 2024) – After a collision on Saturday night, April 6, on the Honoapiilani Highway, a woman has died.

First responders received a report of a motor vehicle accident on the Honoapiilani Highway north of Kapoli Street, close to mile marker 7, at about 3:15 p.m.

Authorities said that a 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was involved in a crash with a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. A 79-year-old Lahaina woman was killed in the incident. Two of the Chevrolet’s three occupants, including the 37-year-old Lahaina woman driving it, suffered injuries. An investigation is still underway in the interim.

We extend our sincere condolences to the deceased woman’s family. Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families.

Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii

Motorcyclists are rendered entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which renders motorcycle riding extremely hazardous. The repercussions of a low-speed, relatively insignificant collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:

  • Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe control of their vehicle and experience impaired judgment.
  • Driver distraction: There are so many accidents that take place on our roadways as a result of drivers who simply are not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
  • Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that severely harm others. We see many accidents take place as a result of drivers who zip between lanes of travel, tailgating other vehicles, and are reckless while operating their cars.
