May 24, 2024
Maui, HI (May 24, 2024) – After a motorcycle collision on Wednesday evening, May 22, in the greater Maui area, at least one person was seriously hurt.
MPD officers were first notified of the crash at about 8:50 p.m. and said that the incident involved at least two vehicles, including a motorcyclist, on Honoapi’ilani Highway near Halawai Drive in Ka’anapali. In addition to the MPD, fire rescue crews and EMTs reported to the crash site to assess the injured victims, transporting the male victim on the motorcycle to a local medical center. However, information on the total number of victims, as well as the extent of their injuries, was not provided publicly. MPD officers asked witnesses to get in touch as they launched an inquiry into the cause of the accident.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their families.
Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii
Motorcyclists are rendered entirely unprotected and exposed in the event of an accident with another vehicle (typically a car), which renders motorcycle riding extremely hazardous. The repercussions of a low-speed, relatively insignificant collision between a car and a motorcycle can be catastrophic for all riders. Adding insult to injury, most of the common causes of these incidents can be traced back to driver negligence, including but not limited to:
- Impairment: Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are most likely to lose control of their vehicles. These drivers may not be able to recognize colors or traffic control devices. They may be unable to maintain safe control of their vehicle and experience impaired judgment.
- Driver distraction: There are so many accidents that take place on our roadways as a result of drivers who simply are not paying attention to the road ahead. Common distractions that lead to accidents in our state include cell phones, food, and even talking to passengers.
- Aggressive driving: When drivers become aggressive while behind the wheel, they are likely to cause accidents that harm others. We see many accidents take place as a result of drivers who zip between lanes of travel, tailgating other vehicles, and are reckless while operating their cars.
