Man Pinned After Truck Crashes Into Store in Hilo, HI

October 2, 2026

Hilo, HI (October 2, 2026) – A pickup truck crashed through the front of a store at Puainako in Hilo around 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 1. The crash left a man inside pinned before emergency units freed him.

According to early reports, he was reportedly conscious afterward, though his injuries have not been specified. Hilo Police were at the scene to manage the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the wreck have not been confirmed. The investigation remains active.

We wish the man a full recovery.

Can a Business Be Held Liable When a Vehicle Crashes Into a Store in Hilo, HI?

Yes, depending on the circumstances. While the driver who crashed into a building is typically the primary focus of a claim, a business or property owner can sometimes share responsibility if conditions on the property contributed to the harm. This could include inadequate bollards or barriers in an area where vehicle intrusion was foreseeable. Whether that applies depends heavily on the specific facts.

Hawaii follows a modified comparative negligence rule, so liability can be divided among more than one party, including the driver, a vehicle owner, and potentially a property owner. A person’s recovery is reduced by their own percentage of fault and barred entirely if that share exceeds 50 percent. When multiple parties may be responsible, insurers often dispute how much each one should pay.

These claims may also cover anyone at the store or parking lot during the incident, including shoppers and workers. While a person hit or hurt by a car driving into a building is clearly blameless, proving liability without doubt requires prompt action.

Key evidence must be collected quickly before records are erased or details are forgotten. Evidence can include security video, official incident reports, or witness statements.

Businesses along busy commercial corridors see significant vehicle and pedestrian traffic, which can raise questions about site design and safety measures in these kinds of incidents.

A Hilo personal injury lawyer can help identify all potentially liable parties, gather surveillance footage before it is lost, and evaluate whether premises liability principles may apply alongside a standard negligence claim against the driver.
