Injuries to Cyclists in Hawaii

Kunia, HI - Injury Accident Involving Cyclist Truck on I-H1 at Waikele

Bicycle collisions occur every single day nationwide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration actually reported that more than 50,000 cyclists were injured during vehicle crashes just in 2012. The majority of these incidents were the result of driver negligence.

There are a seemingly endless number of ways the driver of a truck or car can be negligent, including”

  • Driving above the speed limit
  • Driving while distracted
  • Failing to yield the right-of-way
  • Poor or insufficient vehicle maintenance
  • Driving while under the influence
  • Dooring
  • Failing to obey traffic lights and signs
  • Following another vehicle too closely (tailgating)
  • Failing to use turn indicators
  • Driver inexperience

Against the backdrop of personal injury law, the word negligence has very distinct connotations. This makes it vital that bicycle riders injured due to contact with a motor vehicle discuss the circumstances of their collision with a respected personal injury attorney in Hawaii prior to giving a recorded statement to an insurance company or consenting to any settlement offer.

When cyclists are hit by larger, heavier automobiles, the injuries they usually receive are quite serious. A human body, frail as it is, is absolutely no match for a truck, car, or even a motorcycle, especially one in motion. Additionally, riders can easily be ejected from their bicycles and receive secondary injuries after they come into abrupt contact with the asphalt, another vehicle, structures, or buildings in the vicinity of the accident.

Some of the most common kinds of injuries that cyclists in Hawaii sustain include:

  • Broken or fractured bones
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Contusions and lacerations
  • Damage to the spinal cord
  • Damage to vital internal organs

These and numerous other injuries that are often the result of drivers striking cyclists can result in a considerable amount of pain, both physical and emotional. Additionally, injuries this serious can keep an injured victim from working for weeks or even months, resulting in a substantial loss of income. In extremely severe cases, a victim might even need an in-home carer available to them 24 hours a day to assist them with their daily needs.

A skilled attorney can help you obtain financial compensation for these and other damages you may have incurred due to your bike accident.
