September 1, 2024
Keaau, HI (September 1, 2024) – Two Keaau residents are in the hospital after a wreck in Pahoa Saturday morning, Hawaii Island police officials said. Police said the incident happened on Keaau-Pahoa Road and Kaloli Drive around 7:00 a.m.
Police tell us a 29-year-old man rear-ended a 63-year-old woman, which caused his car to overturn and land on its roof. Officials say he was first taken to Hilo Benioff Medical but is now in critical but stable condition at Queen’s on Oahu. The woman also suffered major injuries, though she’s in stable condition as well. Police believe speed and impairment played a role in this crash; however, the investigation is ongoing. No further details have been made available so far.
Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their families. We hope for their full recovery.
Motor Vehicle Accidents in Hawaii
Motor vehicle collisions are a serious issue in the United States and throughout the state of Hawaii. In fact, close to 10,000 car crashes are reported annually in Hawaii, and these incidents cause thousands of people to sustain injuries. Furthermore, every year, more than six million car wrecks are reported nationwide, most of which are caused by driver negligence. Tragically, it is the victims and their families who pay after such an incident.
Driver negligence often includes speeding, intoxication, distraction, and fatigue. In other words, drivers who pay attention to their phones, the radio, other people in their cars, and anything other than the roadway while operating their motor vehicles put themselves and everyone else at risk of severe injuries or even fatalities. For example, in one recent year, over 11,000 people were killed due to auto accidents caused by speeding. Speeding is one of the most dangerous types of driver negligence because it leaves drivers no time to stop in case of an accident and increases the dangers and risk of catastrophic injuries in the case of a crash.
