Kea‘au, HI – Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Hwy 11 Near Old Volcano Rd

November 9, 2022

Kea’au, HI (November 09, 2022) – A male pedestrian was hit and killed during a traffic accident on Friday, November 4th in Kea‘au.

Officers from the Puna Police Department responded to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. after receiving reports from witnesses of a person lying on the ground alongside the Hilo-bound lanes of Highway 11. Upon their arrival, police located the victim. He was non-responsive with obvious injuries to his lower extremities.

The victim was taken by paramedics to Hilo Medical Center. He was pronounced dead a short while later. Police are working to identify the victim whose name is currently unknown.

A police investigation determined that an unknown vehicle was traveling Hilo-bound when it hit the pedestrian as he pushed a shopping cart along the righthand shoulder of the highway. The Hilo-bound side of Highway 11 between the intersections of Old Volcano Road and Highway 139 was closed for several hours to allow police to conduct an investigation.

As the investigation was ongoing, emergency dispatch received a call from a 60-year-old Mountain View resident. The man informed the operator that he could have possibly been the driver who hit the pedestrian with his car, a 2003 Honda Pilot SUV. Police later confirmed that the vehicle’s front-end damage was consistent with striking an adult pedestrian.

Once the Hawai‘i Police Department East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit concluded its preliminary investigation, the driver was arrested and charged with accidents involving death or serious bodily injury, failing to give information or render aid, and second-degree negligent homicide. He has since been released and further investigation by the EHTEU is pending.

This is the 33rd fatal motor vehicle incident in 2022 compared to 22 at this same time last year.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Wrongful Deaths in Hawaii

Kea‘au, HI - Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Hwy 11 Near Old Volcano Rd

After losing someone in a fatal but avoidable car accident, surviving family members usually face numerous obstacles. Other pressing tasks like making funeral and burial arrangements, paying hospital bills, finding emergency child care, the loss of an income, the restructuring of family obligations and routines, and issues with probate can feel overwhelming when you are dealing with feelings of grief and loss.

While nothing can bring your loved one back, insurance companies typically calculate the value of someone’s life based primarily on the monetary contributions to the family. So, by their estimate, the loss of a family’s breadwinner is worth more than the loss of a mother who gave up her job to care for and homeschool her kids, a retired grandparent, or a child.
