Road Accidents in Hawaii

Kapena Falls, HI - Motor Vehicle Collision With Injuries on Pali Hwy

Studies conducted in the United States have suggested that driving while distracted is actually more unsafe than driving while under the influence. Data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10% of all fatal collisions nationwide involve a distracted driver, representing more than 3,000 deaths every single year.

The Hawai’i Department of Transportation has released statistics showing that the three leading contributing factors to automobile accidents throughout the state are:

  • Distracted driving
  • Driver intoxication
  • Speeding

Distracted driving is defined as any action that takes a driver’s hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, and attention away from driving. Hawaii law currently prohibits the use of a cell phone while driving unless it is hands-free. It also prohibits texting while driving, or any driver who is 18 or younger using any kind of electronic communication device, whether or not it is hands-free.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, driving at a speed of 55 miles per hour while not looking at the road is comparable to driving the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed.

This means that anytime a driver is paying attention to something other than safely operating a vehicle on the roadway, safety becomes a major concern for everyone else around them, including other cyclists, pedestrians, and other drivers.

Although the state is constantly implementing harsh penalties against these kinds of negligent driving, accidents still occur every single day and most of them are caused by distracted driving.
