Hawaii Car Crashes

Auto collisions take place frequently in Hawaii. Three common reasons accidents occur in the state include:

  • Driver intoxication
  • Driver distraction
  • Speeding

Studies concerning different types of driver negligence suggest that distracted driving is actually more dangerous than driving while intoxicated, and, driving while over-tired is basically the same thing as driving drunk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that approximately 10% of all fatal auto crashes in the US involve a drunk or high driver.

Driving while distracted entails anything that takes a driver’s attention from the roadway and their immediate surroundings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that driving for five seconds at about 55 miles per hour is about the same as driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.

Unless your device is hands-free, it is illegal to drive while using a cell phone in Hawaii. Texting and driving is against the law, and drivers who are under the age of 18 are legally prohibited from using any type of technology while behind the wheel.

Safety instantaneously becomes a serious problem when a driver’s attention is diverted from the road for any reason. Pedestrians, other drivers, and anyone whom they encounter on the road is at serious risk for personal injuries or even death when a driver becomes distracted.

Despite harsh penalties implemented against drivers who choose to act negligently in Hawaii, it continues to be a serious problem that injures and takes the lives of numerous people every year. The story remains the same throughout the United States, where over 90% of auto collisions are the result of negligent driving.
