Kalihi, HI – Pedestrian Killed in Accident on Nimitz Onramp on H-1 Fwy

August 20, 2023

Kalihi, HI (August 20, 2023) – A pedestrian lost their life in a serious accident in Kalihi. Reports show the wreck occurred Sunday night, August 13.

Sources say the collision took place on the H-1 Freeway near the onramp to the Nimitz Highway. How the accident occurred is still being investigated by local police.

A man, aged about 40, suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a vehicle. Despite efforts made by emergency personnel, he lost his life shortly after the crash happened.

Authorities report that a motorist was headed west on the H-1 Freeway when they were involved in a collision with the man who was walking across the road. The motorist left the scene without stopping to render aid or wait for police.

Speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. Authorities in Kalihi continue to investigate.

We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.

Hawaii Pedestrian Wrecks

Every year, Hawaii sees numerous accidents that cause injuries for the involved parties. Bone fractures, traumatic spinal cord injuries, and internal organ damage are just a small portion of the injuries reported in these wrecks. A percentage of these involve pedestrians, who often sustain more severe injuries than anyone else involved in traffic accidents in the US. Yearly, over 5,000 pedestrians are reportedly killed in auto collisions throughout the nation.

Numerous factors come into play in the cause of these accidents in Hawaii. Distracted driving is a common contributor of car accidents in the Aloha State as well as across the nation, as it can seriously increase the probability of drivers making mistakes while operating their vehicles. Texting and/or talking on the phone is the distraction most commonly seen, often resulting in devastating injuries and even death. Speeding also poses a severe risk, increasing the difficulty of maintaining control for drivers.

Aggressive driving, including tailgating and reckless driving, puts everyone at risk and can cause traffic collisions. Additionally, wet and slippery road conditions cause accidents. The sad truth is that most of these accidents are preventable. However, we continue to see innocent people hurt as a result of drivers who are reckless and negligent.
